In the few short years since coming to international attention, Alasdair Kent has established himself as a tenor of choice, receiving sustained critical and public acclaim due to his “absolutely secure-on-high and outstandingly technically-schooled tenor” and his “striking good looks.” As a leading man in the operas of Rossini and Mozart, he is heard in leading houses of the world - such as the Wiener Staatsoper, the Bayerische Staatsoper, and the Teatro San Carlo di Napoli. He is increasingly associated with the Italian bel canto of Donizetti, Bellini & Verdi, with French opera ranging from the Baroque Rameau to the Romantic Bizet.

In the 2023-24 season, Alasdair sings Don Narciso (Il turco in Italia) with Opernhaus Zürich; the title role (Orlando paladino) with both Teatro Real Madrid and the Gran Teatre del Liceu; Timur in Salieri’s Cublai, gran kan de’ Tartari with Theater an der Wien, Don Ramiro (Cenerentola) with Deutsche Oper am Rhein; Thespis in a new production of Rameau’s Platée with Opernhaus Zürich and Achille (Iphigénie en Aulide) with the Festival d’Aix-en-Provence. He appears in concert as John/Third Angel in Sir George Benjamin’s Written on Skin with Orchestra national de Lille/Stavanger Symfoniorkester conducted by the composer.

Last season, he made his house début in Vienna singing Almaviva (Il barbiere di Sivilglia); he returned to the Bayerische Staatsoper as Ramiro (Cenerentola) and Belmonte (Die Entführung aus dem Serail); Ferrando (Così fan tutte) on tour with Kammerorchester Basel in Paris, Hamburg, Luxembourg and Basel; Almaviva with Cincinnati Opera and Ernesto (Don Pasquale) for the Teatro Petruzzelli di Bari. He also appeared in concert with Opera Philadelphia in Carmina Burana and with the Stavanger Symphony Orchestra in Bach’s Christmas Oratorio.

Recently Alasdair has sung Almaviva with the Bayerische Staatsoper, Dallas Opera, Oper Köln, Theater Basel and Den Norske Opera & Ballett. He made his role debut as Pepé in Donizetti’s Deux hommes et une femme at the Konzerthaus Berlin with the Berliner Operngruppe. He sang Don Giovanni with Opéra de Toulon, Cenerentola with Opéra Orchestre National Montpellier, L’italiana in Algeri at The Concertgebouw and for Israeli Opera and Arturo in I puritani with Ópera de Oviedo.

Previously, he sang Mosè in Egitto in Naples, Il viaggio a Reims with Rossini Opera Festival, Tancredi with the Teatro Petruzzelli di Bari and Written on Skin with Opera Philadelphia.

Alasdair has won First Prizes in the Joan Sutherland and Richard Bonynge Foundation Bel Canto Award, the Gerda Lissner Foundation International Vocal Competition, the Loren L. Zachary Society National Vocal Competition and the Mildred Miller International Voice Competition.

He speaks English, Italian, German and French and makes his home in Basel, Switzerland.
