Andrew Haveron
violin
Andrew Haveron has been concertmaster of the Sydney Symphony Orchestra since 2013 and has been praised by The Sunday Times as “a charismatic and brilliant soloist who needs fear no comparison.”
A laureate of several major international violin competitions, he studied in London at the Purcell School and the Royal College of Music. He has since established a distinguished career as a soloist, chamber musician and concertmaster. As a soloist, he has collaborated with conductors including Jiří Bělohlávek, Sir Colin Davis, Sir Roger Norrington, David Robertson, Stanisław Skrowaczewski and John Wilson, performing a wide-ranging concerto repertoire—from core works to lesser-known pieces—with many leading orchestras in the United Kingdom
Andrew’s playing has been featured on numerous film and video game soundtracks, including Disney’s Fantasia game, in which he performs Vivaldi’s Four Seasons with the Academy of St Martin in the Fields. In recital, he has appeared throughout Australia with pianists Anna Goldsworthy, Piers Lane and Simon Tedeschi.
Andrew was appointed first violinist of the internationally acclaimed Brodsky Quartet in 1999, with whom he performed extensively worldwide in a repertoire of nearly 300 works. Renowed for their barrier-breaking, cross-genre projects, the quartet collaborated with leading artists and commissioned new music from contemporary composers. During his tenure with the ensemble, Andrew contributed to a discography of more than fifteen albums, earning numerous industry awards. He has also appeared with chamber groups including the Nash Ensemble, Hebrides Ensemble, Logos Chamber Group, Kathy Selby and Ensemble Q.
Andrew has been associated with all the major symphony orchestras in the United Kingdom, and many further afield. As concertmaster of the BBC Symphony Orchestra, he was frequently broadcast on BBC Radio and performed regularly at the BBC Proms, including the Last Night. He also served as concertmaster with the Philharmonia Orchestra and has twice led the World Orchestra for Peace at the invitation of its conductors Valery Gergiev and Sir Donald Runnicles.
Andrew performs on a 1757 G.B. Guadagnini violin, generously loaned by Vicki Olsson for his use with the Sydney Symphony Orchestra. His performance of Walton’s Violin Concerto with the SSO was nominated for a Helpmann Award, and he holds an honorary doctorate from the University of Kent in recognition of his services to music.
